Support, $$, & Thanks

Support is welcome! This project so far is funded out of my own pocket and with support of Systronix Inc in Salt Lake City UT. In an attempt to be transparent here is a link to all project expenses which is being continuously updated as the project proceeds. The spreadsheet includes sub-sheets for development expenses and a costed BOM.

You can contribute directly to my Venmo (if you know me you will recognize my avatar) and all such will be listed here. All contributions go directly to the cost of supplies used in making the face shields. There's no tax deduction since I am just a private person.

You can also donate to a 501c3 which directly supports the larger Native American PPE Project, this is officially part of the University of Utah and is called the Global, Rural, and Underserved Child Health Program MD25647-40165. To donate to that non-profit click here. Some of those funds will eventually help defray some of the cost of materials for face shields sent to the Native American medical centers.

Some 3D Printer Stats

My workhorse Prusa i3Mk2 has needed some repairs and small upgrades but it is still soldiering on. I've learned to do scheduled maintenance at least every Sunday. Here are some stats about its use during the Pandemic. Keep in mind this is just one of the half-dozen printers in use on this project by the printing team . All together we have gone through several 10 lb Filamatrix spools and at least that many 1 kg spools of Matterhackers. Early on, getting any PETG filament was a challenge with lead times of 4+ weeks. The Prusa reports 3.6 km of 1.75 mm PETG filament used . When it gets pushed out the 0.4 mm dia nozzzle, that's equal to 69 km of actual printed filament . That's 75,000 yards . About 750 football field-lengths of filament! PETG has a density of about 1.27 gm/cc. A 1 kg spool holds about 327 meters of 1.75 mm filament. A 10 lb spool holds 1490 meters of 1.75 mm dia filament. We've been purchasing 10 lb spools of clear PETG from  Filamatrix  due to their COVI...

600 FDA EUA Face Shields Now in Use

600 of our reusable shields is roughly equal to 18,000 disposables! That 30-day/shift use number is holding up in the field. We have now shipped to physical therapists, teachers, speech therapists, orchestra members, church workers, social workers, etc in TX, OH, NY, CO, and other states. Demand for face shields has slowed as there is now a glut of disposable shields available, both from China and domestically. But we are still providing them to HCP such as much of the Pediatric ED at the UofU. We have great stock of all the parts and materials so please let us know if you need shields or replacement parts. Since early August I've been able to keep up with demand with my own printers and give the 3D print team a rest. Some printer stats are coming up in the next post.

Shipped 380 reusable shields - equal to over 11,000 disposables

May 03 - 380 reusable shields shipped to Four Corners area - equal to over 11,000 disposables. This is an estimate based on use for 30 shifts vs one shift. That is the design goal, and replacement parts are available. In the chaos of the current crisis it is hard to get accurate usage data but we are working on that. We put in an extra push over the weekend to ship 40 more and as of Sunday night have now shipped a total of 80 to Gallup, NM - which Governor Grisham has put under the state "Riot Control Act" to try to get the virus outbreak under control - here is an LA Times article . Thanks to Angel Flight West for providing free air shipment to airports close to the recipients in the Four Corners area.
