Support, $$, & Thanks

Support is welcome! This project so far is funded out of my own pocket and with support of Systronix Inc in Salt Lake City UT. In an attempt to be transparent here is a link to all project expenses which is being continuously updated as the project proceeds. The spreadsheet includes sub-sheets for development expenses and a costed BOM.

You can contribute directly to my Venmo (if you know me you will recognize my avatar) and all such will be listed here. All contributions go directly to the cost of supplies used in making the face shields. There's no tax deduction since I am just a private person.

You can also donate to a 501c3 which directly supports the larger Native American PPE Project, this is officially part of the University of Utah and is called the Global, Rural, and Underserved Child Health Program MD25647-40165. To donate to that non-profit click here. Some of those funds will eventually help defray some of the cost of materials for face shields sent to the Native American medical centers.

Some 3D Printer Stats

My workhorse Prusa i3Mk2 has needed some repairs and small upgrades but it is still soldiering on. I've learned to do scheduled maintenance at least every Sunday. Here are some stats about its use during the Pandemic. Keep in mind this is just one of the half-dozen printers in use on this project by the printing team . All together we have gone through several 10 lb Filamatrix spools and at least that many 1 kg spools of Matterhackers. Early on, getting any PETG filament was a challenge with lead times of 4+ weeks. The Prusa reports 3.6 km of 1.75 mm PETG filament used . When it gets pushed out the 0.4 mm dia nozzzle, that's equal to 69 km of actual printed filament . That's 75,000 yards . About 750 football field-lengths of filament! PETG has a density of about 1.27 gm/cc. A 1 kg spool holds about 327 meters of 1.75 mm filament. A 10 lb spool holds 1490 meters of 1.75 mm dia filament. We've been purchasing 10 lb spools of clear PETG from  Filamatrix  due to their COVI...

Feedback from Shiprock Providers

Feedback from Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, NM: "This is a great face shield. It allows for coverage of the entire neck, wraps around face, and provides protection from overhead splatter."

SLC Face Shields are FDA Authorized

SLC Face Shields meet the requirements of the FDA letter of Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for medical face shield manufacture during the COVID-19 pandemic as detailed in Sections II and IV of the letter. This EUA specifically applies to use by Health Care Providers (HCP) as part of important PPE to help protect from COVID-19 exposure and to extend the life of face masks worn underneath the shield during this pandemic. Details on this compliance are part of the  Usage and Care document  which is provided to HCP and facilities as required by the EUA.  As of mid-May, 2020, there seems to be an increased supply of mostly single-use face shields which are selling for $5-$8 each. Our shields are multiple-use, much more sturdy, extend up protecting the forehead, and provide more space to use a stethoscope, googles, etc. They are preferred over disposables by HCP who have used them. Our shields last a long time, can be easily renewed, and reduce landfill waste. And they ...
